About
I am a professor of mathematics at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, where I lead the Algebra group and serve as one of the directors of the Lie–Størmer Centre for Fundamental Structures in Computational and Pure Mathematics, a national research centre run jointly with the University of Bergen. At UiT’s Faculty of Science and Technology I act as Pro Dean for PhD education.
A recurring theme in my work is that reflection groups and other symmetries do not merely organize a mathematical problem — used well, they collapse its complexity. Beyond research, I care about the place of mathematics in culture and society, and about mathematics education at every level, from upper secondary school through the doctorate.
Before Tromsø I held positions in Konstanz, at Aalto University in Helsinki, and in Frankfurt, where I completed both a doctorate in mathematics and a Magister in philosophy. I received my Habilitation from the University of Konstanz in 2018.
